One Habit That Has Helped Me Nourish My Body

/ Habits, Health & Wellbeing, Nourish, Start Where You are

This one habit has;

  • saved me time,
  • $$$,
  • reduced food waste
  • helped me nourish my body
  • made my day and week run smoothly.

Wanna know what it is? Without further ado – drum roll please…..Ta dah – it is Menu Planning! Okay before you cringe and do a runner! Let me share how this one habit was one of the tools that transformed my health and well being and helped me lose 70 kilos in the process.

While I used to menu plan prior to changing my lifestyle, I wasn’t consistent with it. Over the last two years menu planning has become like brushing my teeth – it’s just what I do without thinking too much about it.

In our household we shop on a Sunday so over the weekend I check out the pantry, see what we have in our fridge and freezer and what left overs we have or what needs to be used up. This helps me create a menu plan and create a shopping list for the week ahead.

A4 Single Sheet of Paper

Menu planning

  • Helps me to create a shopping list.
  • Makes my week run smoother.
  • Ensures we eat a variety of foods.
  • Has saved us $$$.
  • Allows me to focus on my life rather than what my next meal is going be.
  • Means less time in the kitchen and a few nights off cooking.
  • Has reduced the food waste in our home.
  • I cook more from scratch and enjoy it.
  • Ensures we cycle through food in the fridge, freezer and pantry on a regular basis.

Prior to making changes to how I nourish my body, I found I used to make the same things time and time again and used a lot of pre-made bases and products. Or often I couldn’t be bothered cooking and we would up buying takeaways. I am embarrassed to admit that we used to have a lot of food waste prior to this.

cookbooks

To keep things interesting, I will make at least one new recipe a week. This keeps me motivated and prevents me from getting into a food rut and ensures variety. I menu plan based on what leftover ingredients we have in our fridge and freezer. As I have the time, I make a lot of meals from scratch and every few weeks I will spend a Sunday afternoon batch cooking and creating meals for the freezer such as bliss balls and slices.

As a lot of recipes are designed for 4 to 6 serves. I will either make:

  • the full recipe – eat one serve and freeze the additional portions
  • a new meal by adding some new ingredients to create a new dish altogether.
  • one meal with half of the protein and then create a different meal with the other half the next day.
menuplan and cookbooks and pen

Any meal we freeze we label with what it is the date and eat them within a month. This means I often get one to two nights a week where I don’t have to cook and can heat and eat what I pull from the freezer. It also has an additional benefit that it is a great back up for those busy weeks which saves us defaulting to eating out or buying takeaways because we can’t be bothered cooking. Yet is flexible enough where if something happens, during the week I can swap meals around.  I love having this kind of flexibility. It helps me keep my portion sizes front of mind. (Prior to this, we were both eating bigger portion sizes and you all know how that ended up for me).

There are probably apps to put your menu plan on. However, I love pen and paper and keeping our weekly plan on display on the fridge so we remember what we need to take out of the freezer or make. I currently use a printed menu plan. Prior to that I would use an A4 sheet of paper and divide it into seven rows and four columns (one for snacks) and fill it in.

📸We've all become experts at curating the perfe 📸We've all become experts at curating the perfect image of our lives on social media, but what happens when we start to believe the highlights reel is the whole story? It's time to start embracing the good and the bad, and finding beauty in the messy middle.

🎂I recently celebrated my birthday by spending a night alone in the inner city, reflecting on the past year and journaling about what I want to embrace at 54. I then spent my actual birthday with Mike in the Wairarapa, and the highlight was enjoying fish and chips for dinner while drinking champagne at home.

📃I created a list of 23 things to do in 2023 as an alternative to setting goals. One item on the list was to write to other women living overseas. I took part in InCoWriMo in Feb & now have penpals from Italy, the UK, & Australia.

📚I spent the last few months reading fiction for pleasure & managed to read 37 books, after feeling mentally tired from reading a lot of nonfiction in 2022.

📵I stopped using the WW app & program after four years because I was tired of tracking. I have embarked on a new part of my wellbeing journey. At the time WW gave me the structure I needed, Now I am experimenting with what works best for me now.

🏥A family member had an extended hospital stay, this led to comfort eating, & withdrawing from life. Later on I recognised the impact of stress and created a list of things to look out for in the future to better recognise stress to improve my overall wellbeing.

🐌In 2023, I chose "Savour, Slow & Simplify" as my word of the year. After a stressful few months, I decided to declutter my home and donate items to the Hospice shop. I am trying to be more intentional with my consumption and breaking up with my attachment to "stuff".

🧎‍♀️I have been dealing with a knee injury since January, which has prevented me from taking walks around the neighbourhood. Despite previously disliking walking, not being able to go out 3 to 4 times a week has been a challenge for me. However, I am a solutions-focused person and decided to hire a treadmill, which has been helping my knee slowly improve. I am now enjoying using the treadmill.

Embracing mistakes as learning experiences, practi Embracing mistakes as learning experiences, practicing self-compassion, celebrating progress, and sharing our stories are all important steps in cultivating resilience and growth. Just like Kintsugi pottery, we can use our imperfections and challenges as opportunities for transformation and empowerment.

✨️Embrace mistakes as learning experiences: Just like how Kintsugi uses gold to highlight and enhance the cracks in pottery, we can use our mistakes as opportunities to learn and improve ourselves. Instead of being ashamed of our mistakes, we should embrace them and use them to become better versions of ourselves.

🙏Practice self-compassion: When we make mistakes or face challenges, it's important to be kind to ourselves. Just like how Kintsugi treats broken pottery with care and respect, we should also treat ourselves with compassion and understanding. By showing ourselves the same kindness we would show a close friend, we can build resilience and bounce back from tough situations.

🎉Celebrate progress, not just perfection: Kintsugi celebrates the beauty of imperfection, but it also celebrates the progress made in repairing broken pottery. Similarly, we should celebrate our progress and growth, even if we're not perfect. By focusing on progress rather than perfection, we can build confidence and motivation to continue moving forward.

🎤Share your story: Kintsugi pottery tells a story of resilience and transformation. Similarly, sharing our own stories of overcoming challenges and embracing imperfection can inspire and empower others to do the same. By being vulnerable and sharing our experiences, we can create connection and support for ourselves and others.

Choosing a word of the year has been a game-change Choosing a word of the year has been a game-changer for me since I discovered this 12 years ago.

This year, I have three words &, I am focusing on savouring, slowing down, and simplifying. These words act as my North Star and remind me of what truly matters.
