4 Steps to Create an Altar in your Home

/ sacred, Soul

sacred-altar

An altar serves as a reminder to what is sacred to you. An anchor of sorts. I When I was in my early 30’s, I was flatting with two others – and at the time, my bedroom was my sanctuary. Within my bedroom, I placed a round bedside table in a corner, draped a pink tablecloth over it and then put items that were special to me back then;

  • an essential oil burner
  • a candle
  • photos of my grandparents
  • an angel figurine
  • a book of uplifting quotes

On the walls of those corners, I placed inspiring posters of words of wisdom and an angel print. Whenever I walked into my bedroom, I would gravitate to this corner. It felt meaningful to me. My flatmates probably just thought it was a table with stuff.

This corner of my bedroom would help ground me and made me happy at the same time. At the time, I wasn’t sure why this had such an effect on me.  What I know now is that I had created an altar. I just didn’t know that’s what it was.  If you look around your home, you might find that you have one particular place in your home that is also an altar – items that take you back to a specific time or place with people. Items that bring you joy.

That corner of my room was a place where I would,  restore my energy and to connect to my inner wisdom and soul – it was a place to come home to within myself. I just hadn’t realised it back then.

What is an altar?

Altars have been used over centuries and not only in the traditional sense of churches, temples and sacred sites by various religions – they also appeared in homes and;

  • served as a focal point
  • a reminder of the sacred
  • where people could connect to spirit
  • focus on their spiritual growth, whether you were religious or not.

You can create an altar to;

  • Represent the current season e.g. Autumn
  • Remember loved ones
  • Honour the new moon/full moon
  • Celebrate your birthday or another life milestone
  • Pray
  • Connect to spirit
  • Meditate & restore energy

Four steps to creating an altar

Creating an altar was something I intuitively did. It can be as straightforward or as elaborate as you want it to be. Like anything – take from this post what works for you and put your spin on it.

Choose

As you walk through your home – is there a space or room in your home that nourishes you or comforts you. Is there a space that you find yourself drawn too? What could you use as the base of your altar – a table, shelf and or cabinet? If you feel funny about calling it an altar – call it your special place, or a collection of memories or uplifting items or a vignette. If you are embarrassed about what others may think – create your altar in your bedroom or choose a space where there is less foot traffic. Or use a box to store your special items and it can double as an altar.

Clean

Whatever you are using – does it need to be wiped down or dusted?  If you would like you could drape your altar in fabric – to protect your surface top. You could use a fabric that has had a special meaning to you or gorgeous material that you like. Or don’t – this is your altar and there is no right or wrong with what you do and how it looks and feels.

Create

Listen to your inner wisdom, and ask what it would like on your altar. What feeds your soul? What do these items mean to you? Do these items honour what is sacred to you? Whether its to meditate, pray or simply sit and restore your energy. You will know what is right for you and when to change it up. You could add items that represent the elements of earth, water, fire and air. Remember, there is no right or wrong – be guided by your inner wisdom and your own beliefs.

Suggested items you could include;

  • Photos of loved ones
  • Feathers
  • Fresh flowers
  • Pot plant
  • Books that have meaning to you
  • Crystals
  • Affirmations
  • Oracle Cards
  • Special items with significant meaning
  • Shells
  • Candles
  • Incense
  • Deities
  • An element found on a walk that has meaning to you
  • Pictures or prints of inspiring words

Bless/Give Thanks

When you have set up your altar you may want to say a few words out loud to yourself. What you say is entirely up to you. After I create my space, I like to to use an essential room spray for the area or diffuse oils. You may decide to smudge your altar, or skip this step altogether.  Do what feels right for you.

Do you have an altar or special shelf or table with items that are special to you? I would love to if you shared a picture of your altar?

Whether last year was the ultimate stressful situa Whether last year was the ultimate stressful situation or you have painful memories of past Christmas seasons, this exercise will help put this years Christmas into perspective.

Take some time to think about the top 5 outcomes you want for this years Christmas season. They could be things like: more family time, less running around and more relaxation, see Christmas lights, don't do neighbours gifts, have people bring a plate to share for your Christmas Day meal, etc etc.

Now that you have time to think and process your top 5 outcomes take some time to write your list down. When you write down what you want they are more likely to happen.

🌳There are seasons in your life in the same way 🌳There are seasons in your life in the same way as there are seasons in nature.

There are times to cultivate and create, when you nurture your world and give birth to new ideas and ventures.

There are times of flourishing and abundance, when life feels in full bloom, energized and expanding.

And there are times of fruition, when things come to an end. They have reached their climax and must be harvested before they begin to fade.

And finally, of course, there are times that are cold and cutting and empty, times when the spring of new beginnings seems like a distant dream.

Those rhythms in life are natural events. They weave into one another as day follows night, bringing, not messages of hope and fear, but messages of how things are.

I do love how like nature we can ebb and flow in our own rhythms & sometimes our seasons of life don't quite match the physical season.

I am in the cultivating and creation stage and looking forward to sharing new ideas and ventures with you.

THE BEST ADVICE I EVER GOT. Thanks to @dan THE BEST ADVICE I EVER GOT.

Thanks to @dan.thehuman, a few years ago he shared some top advice – that completely changed my life. The advice?

Movement is Medicine!

When I first began to exercise with my mindset at that time was crap, I had limited mobility and was morbidly obese. I saw exercise as a quick fix, for me to do until I felt better.

His advice helped me transform from a couch potato who saw exercise as punishment to a woman who loves to move her body 5 to 6 days a week – one step at a time! No quick fixes.

🤸‍♀️Movement boosts your mindset and energy levels and more importantly allows you to feel connected to your body and can help you determine where your energy and time should be spent.

💕When you choose movement that:
• supports your body and is sustainable you’re investing in your future health and self.
• you love rather than endure you make time for it in your life and this creates consistency.

🐢Remember,

•Movement is not a short-term fix; it’s a lifelong habit!
•It’s your journey – don’t compare your progress to anyone else’s and take your time
•Small steps applied consistently over time yields results.

🌻Everyone grows & develops at a different rate. 🌻Everyone grows & develops at a different rate.

Give yourself permission to grow.

Give yourself permission to grow beyond people around you.
You may outgrow some people all together or in a certain capacity.

Don't allow people that refuse to grow hold you back.

Do you believe that reaching out to someone, e.g. Do you believe that reaching out to someone, e.g. a coach somehow indicates that you aren’t enough? That it somehow means you’re incapable and not smart enough, strong enough or good enough?

-Well let me assure you, the people who come to coaching are all of those things, extremely capable, smart, strong and a whole lot more.

-They choose coaching because they are ready to accelerate their personal or professional lives and working with a coach helps them to achieve their goals faster, easier and with better results than they could on their own.

🤸‍♀️Act Your Age! How often do we hear th 🤸‍♀️Act Your Age! How often do we hear this phrase – facetiously or not?

When someone says this to me and (trust me I have heard this a few times in my life) as an adult!

🤸‍♀️I remind myself that:
-Each of us experience aging in a different way.
-Age isn’t something to be acted, but experienced.
-Expressing our inner joy is fulfilling!
-Having a little fun in life doesn’t mean we let go of our responsibilities of being an adult.

What are your thoughts on this phrase?
